Daycare Magazines and JournalsPrint and Online Resources for Early Childhood EducatorsJournals and magazines for preschool teachers and daycare providers
It is prudent for daycare providers and preschool teachers to have a wide range of resource materials at their disposal and to continue to educate themselves beyond their formal studies. In addition to books and online magazines, many early childhood organizations publish scholarly journals and informative print magazines. These journals and magazines support early childhood education curriculum and allow early childhood educators to stay up-to-date with current studies, policies, products, and practices. Informal Magazines for Early Childhood EducatorsTeaching Young Children Teaching Young Children, published by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, is a magazine specifically for preschool teachers which offers articles about best practices, research, teaching ideas, and other preschool related topics. Teaching Young Children contains short informative articles which support the standards set forth by the NAEYC, and is written in an informal and friendly style. The Mailbox Magazine This helpful and brightly colored idea magazine provides age specific activities, forms, worksheets, patterns and skill lines to support early childhood education curriculum. Daycare providers and preschool should choose to subscribe to the preschool edition of The Mailbox Magazine. Subscribers also receive access to The Mailbox Companion, its online service, which provides bonus ideas and skill sheets. Early Childhood Today Published by Scholastic, Inc., Early Childhood Today recently transitioned from a print magazine to an online magazine. While educators will not have access to a printed form of this publication, they can still benefit from their highly researched archived articles as well as current articles. Educators can search from a vast selection of over 2,000 magazine articles on topics such as activities, behavioral development, curriculum ideas, and leadership. They can also subscribe to the Early Childhood Today newsletter and swap tips and strategies with other early childhood educators. Scholarly and Peer Reviewed Publications for Early Childhood EducatorsYoung Child Young Child is yet another fantastic resource published by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Young Child is a scholarly, peer reviewed journal in contrast to Teaching Young Children, which is written in a more relaxed format. This bi-monthly publication focuses on issues related to early childhood education. Childhood Education Published six times per year by the Association for Childhood Education International, Childhood Education is a respected journal which features articles modern classroom practices and the critical issues that affect the education of children and families. Childhood Education keeps educators abreast with regard to the latest in teaching strategies, research, policy, classroom technology, and media. Many organizations allow educators to preview an issue of their magazine or journal before they subscribe. Some organizations such as the NAEYC will offer a free subscription to their publication with membership as an incentive.
