November is a time to think of fun fall activities, vibrant leaves, and of course Thanksgiving. Creating a November bulletin board in the early childhood classroom can be a great way to introduce basic seasonal and holiday concepts to the young child. This article outlines themes, concepts, and steps for creating a November classroom bulletin board.

November Bulletin Board Themes for the Preschool Classroom

There are several different themes or concepts to choose from when planning a November bulletin board. These themes may include holidays, autumn, simple letters or colors. Try to imagine what will most interest and intrigue the children in the class. Think of ideas that will be visual reminders of what has been learned, or concepts that easily connect to daily lesson plans.

November theme examples include:

  • The Thanksgiving Holiday: Create a board that is filled with thanksgiving themed visuals such as turkeys, Pilgrims, or Native American Indians. Add in words and phrases such as "Give Thanks!" or "Share".
  • Autumn/ Fall Theme: Before the winter arrives, take this opportunity to create a special seasonal bulletin board. Use fall colors such as yellow, brown, red, and orange. Add in autumn leaves or pumpkins.
  • Letters: Make the November bulletin board about learning literacy skills. Use stencils to create the word "November" in vibrant fall colors. Ask for help from the class in thinking about more November or fall themed words to place on the board.
  • Calendar: Turn the classroom bulletin board into a giant November calendar. Highlight special days and holidays.

Materials to Create a School Bulletin Board

There are a variety of great materials to choose from when designing and creating a classroom bulletin board. Large pieces of paper will be needed for the background (to cover the board). It is most economical to use rolled paper such as butcher paper or inexpensive solid gift wrap.

The lettering and some details on the board can be created with construction paper. This is an excellent way to reuse the random scraps of paper left over from classroom art projects.

Special materials can give the November bulletin board an added touch. Try tissue paper, real fallen leaves, felt, foam, or colored cellophane. If there is to be lettering directly drawn on to the board, use a bright permanent marker.

Display Child Created Art

The November bulletin board (as well as any other bulletin board) is a great way to display child created artwork. Use fall and holiday themed artwork that has been made in the classroom to decorate the board.

Examples of artwork themes that will tie in to this bulletin board include:

  • Fall leaf paintings, prints, or leaf rubbings.
  • Pilgrim hats or pictures.
  • Finger painting in fall colors.
  • Hand print turkeys or other turkey art.

Designing a November bulletin board for the early childhood classroom can be a special way to introduce new concepts or dimply make visual connections to the classroom curriculum. Use lettering, vibrant fall colors, and child created artwork to add a seasonal feel to this classroom display.
