Inevitable Daycare Illnesses

Sometimes there is nothing that a teacher can do-- sometimes illness is inevitable in the daycare.

For all of the articles that I have written here on being prepared and keeping illness away from the daycare setting, sometimes there is nothing that you can do, as I witnessed yesterday. One of our students came to school feeling sick and during nap time, ended up throwing up twice on the floor of the carpeted area of the daycare. And our custodian is on vacation this week. Typically if there is a mess in the carpeted area we put Vo-Ban on the dirty area and then leave it until Mr. Brian can come in and vacuum it up and treat it with more professional carpet cleaners.

However, we were still able to wash the area with carpet cleanser and cordon off the area with chairs until it dried. We also had Mary, the little girl, lay down in another area until she was picked up. After all of the children had left for the day, I walked around the center with spray sanitizer and hit all of the most commonly-touched toys, handles, chairs etc. in order to eradicate any stray germs that Mary may have left around the room.

Sometimes there is really nothing that a teacher can do about illness. All that we can do is react and try to prevent more illness.
